Friends, Family, and Scones

On the plate:  Leftovers and freshly made scones.  I adapted the recipe from the following recipe:  instead of blackberries, I substituted 1/2 cup dried cherries, 1/4 cup white chocolate chips, and 1/4 cup slivered almonds.

Soundtrack to cook to:  Paula Abdul Medley and New Kids on the Block's Greatest Hits...needless to say, I was jonesing for the 90s. :)

Boiler up!  Unfortunately Purdue football didn't have the best weekend, but we had a little Boilermaker reunion of our own.  Joseph, Alexander and I met up with some friends from Purdue for brunch this morning at one of our favorite brunch spots:  The Blue Room in Cambridge, MA.  They have a buffet-style brunch that is pretty fantastic.  The chefs cook the dishes right in front of you and everything is fixed with fresh ingredients.  Thankfully, we got there at 10:50 a.m. (their brunch begins at 11) and they were able to seat us.  We had a great time catching up with Becky, Olga, and Olga's friend.  Alexander enjoyed nibbling off of our plates and allowed us to stay and chat with our friends for almost 2 hours.

After our afternoon nap, Kristen and her corgi named Holmes came by for their weekly visit.  Alexander loved having two dogs in the house and was constantly chasing after Oscar and Holmes and trying to sit on both of them at the same time.

After Kristen and Holmes left, we had dinner, and put the baby down for the night.  Then, I decided that we should have fresh baked scones for breakfast and went straight to baking.  I like that this uses whole wheat flour and I also substitute skim milk for heavy cream.

Voila!  Freshly baked honey wheat scones with dried cherries,
slivered almonds, and white chocolate chips.
Report:  The scones turned out beautifully.  The white chocolate chips melted into the dough so nicely that they gave the scones a delightful hint of sweetness that scones don't typically have.  The almonds give a nice little crunch and texture and the cherries are a nice tart contrast to the sweetness of the chocolate chips.  Success! :)

It was a fantastic weekend full of fun, food, friends, and family.  I look forward to next weekend and what fun things are in store!!

Love and kisses,
Nikki
